I have known Alan since he was 16 and just finishing his apprenticeship. Even at that age he took great care to achieve the very high standards which remain his trademark after all this time.
Each day starts with a cheerful announcement of his arrival, followed by his achievement intentions for the day, often rounded off with a tuneful whistling of his morning melody, “I’d like a nice cup of tea”. Given the amount of work he gets through in a day, that is a very civilised way to get started.
Alan does not cut corners; he will take infinite care to source the right materials before he starts. Because he has always done everything needed here, additional building, wear and tear repairs (i.e. slipping roof slates, flat roof emergency repairs on cold, windy and dark Christmas Eve), wonderful painting and decorating - both indoors and out, both he and I know that there will be no nasty surprises which might have lain hidden for many years.
Last year he completed an urgent garage conversion done at very short notice. Throughout he showed immense kindness, taking great care to make as little disruption as possible. The result is stunning and made a safer environment when it was most needed.
He has just finished a long-overdue decorating job - hall, stairs and landing, only truly appreciated when he stripped off previous wallpaper and found his own name and date - 1987!
I look forward to Alan working here; but although I am confident the work will stand up to that same time-span, I’m not sure my knees will carry me up those stairs.

Alan painted the exterior of our detached house and double garage. Some scaffolding was required at the sides of the house and this was put up and removed quickly after Alan had finished. We only recently moved in to the house and it didn’t look like some exterior areas, the bits that needed scaffolding, had been painted for many years. I’m extremely pleased with the result and the house now looks so much better. There was no mess and the work was done quickly but efficiently. Alan took the time to mask the windows and doors, from what I’ve observed with other decorators in the area this isn’t something that’s always done. He even took time to sand off old paint which had been splashed on the chimney brickwork to give it a neat finish. I’d have no hesitation in recommending Alan.

Alan first helped us when he shinned up a ladder onto my roof on an icy snowy morning, a few days before Christmas 2009 to fix a cowl to our chimney.
After this heroic act and much other work, he is the man we rely on for all our building and painting needs. He has knocked through a 2 foot Devon internal wall in our house to install French doors, fitted and tiled a new kitchen, altered a chimney breast for a wood burning stove, helped install a new toilet and painted the exterior of our home for us. We always look forward to him coming and we know his work can be relied on. Most importantly for us if we phone him with an urgent request for help he has always been with us within a few days. He thinks carefully about what needs doing and fixes the problem promptly without fuss .
We don’t really want to recommend him to anyone else we want to keep him for ourselves!

I have known Alan for several years through friends and aquaintences and I have seen his work on several houses in the area. He is without doubt a very highly skilled and dilligent craftsman. He has worked on my house on a couple of occassions and has been cheerful, trustworthy and extremely helpful whenever he has been with us. The standard of the finish that he is able to bring to the work he does is brilliant and given the breadth of the work he is able to do this really is saying something.
His prices are very reasonable and I would have no hesitation in recomending him to anyone for any work they need to tackle. I also believe that anyone who employs him for the first time is highly likely to find themselves recomending him to others once they have experienced his work first hand.

My house is an old property built in 1730 and, though it was sound and very liveable, it required the skills of a real craftsman to bring it sympathetically into the 21st century. I was keen that the character should be maintained but that the house became warm and ecologically efficient. Alan initially painted the outside of the property for me in august 2009 and did such a good job, not only with the rendering but also with the decking around the property, that I asked him to work inside. Alan has completely renovated my home from top to bottom; ceilings have been replaced, internal walls have been replaced and insulated; Every room has been decorated to an extremely high standard and a new elegant staircase is now in situ. I am thrilled with the work carried out in my home and with the attitude Alan has to his profession. He is pleasant to have around which was important to me when the house was in such a chaotic state at times. Alan always cleaned up at the end of the day and left me in a situation which was manageable. The project was huge and took 18 months to complete-worth every penny though and real value for money.

Alan James initially did exterior and interior painting for a house (owned by my mother) in Yelverton about 10 years ago. I eventually inherited the house and had no hesitation in asking Alan to continue looking after the property. This ultimately involved him in overseeing a fairly extensive refurbishment.
